This is an event for science educators where we have the opportunity to
1. Showcase something that we have done that is worth sharing with other educators (don’t be shy … you have awesome stuff or I wouldn’t be trying to convince you to share)
2. Engage in professional development that is different than the one-off hour long sessions that you may have encountered at conventions or conferences (more details below) and
3. Connect and network with like-minded science educators from across the country as well as rubbing elbows with many excellent scientists here at the Canadian Light Source and University of Saskatchewan
Soooo the details? www.scienceonstage.ca August 8th-13th 2010 Saskatoon SK
SoSC 2010 offers three avenues of professional development. SoSC offers participants the unique opportunity for your students to have an authentic scientific inquiry experience through the Students on the Beamlines programme at the Canadian Light Source. The University of Saskatchewan’s College of Engineering offers multiple practical sessions. A Problem Based Learning workshop focussing on the life sciences is a third option offered by the College of Agriculture and Bioresources. Even more information about these can be found at http://www.lightsource.ca/scienceonstage/act_cls.php
Costs? Well, like last year we are looking for funding so that everyone who is selected (yes it’s an application process) is fully funded including travel, registration ($250), accommodations, and meals. We were successful last year and I’m sure we will be again. Right now there is funding for four or five people that are interested specifically in preparing for the Students on the Beamlines program so please let me know if you are interested as soon as you can.
I’ve attached one of our fact sheets for your perusal and encourage you to call or email me if you have questions. Please feel free to share! If you are definitely interested, please fill out the form here:
http://www.lightsource.ca/scienceonstage/form.php. We would like to get back to people with an acceptance by June so sooner is better than later!
Take care!
Tracy
