BCAPT Members at the CAP 2010 in Toronto

CAP 2010 Congress has been a huge success. More than 855 Canadian physics teachers, physics students, physicists, astronomers, chemists and physics educators attended the Congress. The Division of Physics Education (DPE) had 5 regular parallel sessions, participated in a poster session, organized a very successful education workshop and the inaugural workshop for the new faculty teaching workshop. In addition, there was a full day high school teacher day that was attended by 50 high school teachers from the Greater Toronto Area. The Congress had a number of outstanding plenary speakers including two Nobel laureates: Charles Townes (the inventor of the MASER and LASER) and John Polanyi (our Canadian Nobel Laureate). Two of BC physics teachers and BCAPT members received teaching awards (P. Freeman and M. Milner-Bolotin) and two of BCAPT members presented at the DPE events (M. Milner-Bolotin and D. Matthewson). Don gave two excellent presentations on Kwantlen University science outreach (see photo below) and on the design of the physics courses focused on energy. During Don’s interactive presentation on Kwantlen outreach CAP past president (2010) Robert Mann was asked to take on the challenge. Marina presented on using technology in physics teaching and on the importance of Teaching Assistants in undergraduate physics teaching. The next CAP congress will take place next June in Newfoundland (St. John’s – Memorial University of Newfoundland).
