An Official Announcement by BC Premier Mr. Gordon Campbell:
The Government of British Columbia is proud to proclaim The Year of Science. Through the Year of Science we hope to raise awareness and promote a passion for science in our province’s young people.
Science isn’t just about making our lives easier and more fun with convenient technological advances like cell phones and flat screen TVs. It is about using research to change our world for the better. For example, science is about finding new treatments to halt the spread of some cancers or the discovery of potential drugs to fight swine flu. Or about understanding how genomes could stop pine beetles from destroying trees. Or studying the ocean to help us better understand climate change and hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis.
By the end of this decade, three quarters of all future jobs in B.C. will need some post-secondary education, and many of the most interesting and well-paying jobs will need a solid understanding of math, sciences, engineering and technologies. There are many exciting career opportunities throughout the science community.
By encouraging the young people of our province to pursue a better education in science today, we will be preparing them for the jobs of tomorrow and ensuring they have the knowledge and skills to build a strong economy, contribute to a healthier environment and bring about a brighter future for everyone.

Premier Gordon Campbell
