Report from SFU Pro-D Day

On February 16, 2024, SFU and BCAPT hosted a joint Pro-D event for secondary school science teachers.  The event was attended by almost 40 educators and was organized by Dr. Simin Najmi and her colleagues from the Department of Physics at SFU. The program of the event included presentations, demo-shows, lab tours and more:

  • Dr. Sarah Johnson and Dr. Daniel Higginbottom delivered talks on “First-year Physics Teaching at SFU” and “Quantum computing, networking, and the quantum internet”. Both presentations were very engaging and prompted many interesting questions from the audience.
  • A combination of both simple, cost-effective demos and fancier displays were set up so that teachers could get practical ideas for their own classrooms and be inspired. Participants greatly enjoyed this part of the program and found it very educational.
  • A one-hour tour of 4D labs (4D: Design, Develop, Demonstrate, Deliver) was arranged for the afternoon. Participants were impressed by these facilities and learned about the research opportunities available for both undergrad and graduate students. Many expressed interest in organizing similar tours for their high school students in the future.

BCAPT and all the attendees would like to thank Dr. Najmi for a very informative event.
